Your Survival Guide to Managing Stress
Tips and Tricks for the End of the Year

Someone in your life has surely already said this, but can you believe it’s already December?!
Students are gearing up for finals season, project managers are wrapping up months of work, and caregivers are doing the most to create a magical holiday season for their loved ones while juggling their own needs and responsibilities.
We see you, and we’re here to help.
We’ve all been told not to procrastinate, to make to-do lists or schedules for ourselves, and to budget in time for self-care.
Here are some tips and tricks that go a step further to support anyone this end-of-year season, no matter what phase or stage of life you’re in.

Find Release in Sound and Motion
Our stress response is evolutionarily optimized to help us fight back or run away in the face of danger. However, when we are confronted with psychological stressors, like an impending exam or work deadline, we might not have the chance to release some of that adaptive energy that gets stored up. Let it out by dancing to your favorite song, going for a walk or run, or my personal favorite as a Michigan State alum, with a midnight scream!

Use the ‘Pomodoro’ Technique for Time Management
Need to study or get a project done, but having trouble focusing? The ‘Pomodoro’ technique will help you to ‘lock in’ while supporting your brain with healthy breaks. Here’s how to use it:
Select a single task to focus, whether it’s writing your final paper, studying for an exam, or addressing Christmas cards, pick one task to work on.
Set a timer and work continuously for 25 minutes. It may help to leave your phone in another room or to close out of any applications or browsing windows that you don’t need for your task.
After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break. Grab a snack or some water, do a few jumping jacks, or snuggle with a pet, whatever will help you to recharge.
Repeat steps 2–3 for 4 rounds.
Take a longer break for 30 minutes, and then repeat steps 2– 4 as needed.

Establish Healthy Boundaries
Studying with friends for finals and spending time with loved ones during the holidays can have so many benefits: we know that social support improves both physical and mental health! Establish healthy boundaries so that these interactions remain rewarding.
You don’t have to pack every minute of your day with plans just because every friend or relative who is back in town wants to see you. Set aside time for yourself, and invite friends or relatives to join you while you run errands, do a workout, or enjoy a holiday light display.
YOU MATTER !
We are here to cheer you on as you move towards the 2025 finish line. Stay resilient!
