Community talks on Genetics & Health

Community Voices in Health Research

An update from Dr. Ruvvy

Last month, I (Dr. Ruvvy) attended community talks from the Faith Based Genetic Research Institute.

The Faith Based Genetic Research Institute is a partner of Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute that aims to:

Educate, empower, and elevate populations, composed primarily of people of color, on the benefits of being engaged with the medical community and advanced therapeutics.”

💡 Here’s what we learned from scientists and community members

  • Young people want to know what they can do to prevent chronic medical conditions

    • Scientists recommended:

      • Engaging in wellness practices (see our Guided Exercise series on YouTube!)

      • Engaging in faith or cultural communities (check out Choose Healthy Life to find your local hub at the intersection of faith and health through 10 Detroit churches!)

      • Ensuring healthy daily intake of Vitamin D

      • Policies that ensure availability and access to clean water

  • Black/African American individuals have been under-represented in studies of human health and treatment of disease.

👉This under-representation leads to widening health disparities.

  • Increasing participation of Black/African American individuals requires building trust and communication, to ultimately improve health and ensure Black/African American people can benefit from personalized medicine.

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
