Female Pioneers in Science
Celebrating the strides made by women during this Women's History Month

Happy Women’s History Month!
In 1987, March was declared Women’s History Month. March was the perfect choice, as March 8th has celebrated International Women’s Day every year since 1911. But this year felt different.
You may or may not have noticed that Apple and Google silently removed International Women’s Day from their calendars this year. This action is no coincident and mirrors the U.S. government’s ongoing attacks on women and women’s health. The words ‘female’, ‘women’, and ‘LGBTQIA+’, for example, are all words and topics that could potentially bar scientific research grants using these words and focusing on these topics from receiving federal funding. Training programs that aim to lift up women and gender diverse individuals in STEM have also been cut at the federal level.
Now more than ever, it is important to recognize and celebrate the contributions women and gender diverse people have made to science and health.
Last week on our Instagram, we honored the Women Pioneers of Science!
Promoting diversity, representation, and inclusion in the sciences is essential. It ensures that we recognize and celebrate the contributions of all individuals who have shaped these fields. Take, for example, Dr. Katalin Karikó: After being told that she didn’t have what it takes to lead her own lab at a University, she decided that she would not give up. Dr. Karikó went on to make discoveries that ultimately contributed to the development of life-saving COVID-19 vaccines. Her story of persistence is an inspiration not just for women, but for all scientists working to make the world a healthier place.
I also have to give a shoutout to the women in my life—the Groovy Ruvvy Gals (my mom and grandma), and the women mentors I’ve had along the way in my journey as a scientist (Drs. Tanja Jovanovic, Natalie Phillips, Hilary Marusak, Alana Conti, Christine Rabinak, and others). THANK YOU for showing me that I belong here and I can make a difference.
Do you have a woman in your life who inspired you? Send them this newsletter and give them a big THANK YOU for the impact they have made on your life 🙂
