Exploring Common Psychology Myths vs. Facts

In this newsletter, Dr. Ruvvy explains some common myths in psychology. These misconceptions are often spread through social media, pop culture, and everyday conversations. But how much of what we believe about the brain is actually true? Let’s take a closer look and separate fact from fiction.
Myth: We only use 10% of our brain ❌
Fact: ✅
This is not true, our brains are always active. While some areas may be more active than others depending on what we’re doing, multiple regions work together at all times. Even something simple like looking at a friend involves perception, memory, and mounting an appropriate behavioral response, all across different parts of the brain.
Fact: ✅
Introversion is a personality trait, not a disorder. Introverted individuals can still enjoy socializing, they may just need more time to recharge afterward.
In contrast, Social Anxiety Disorder involves distress and impairment that can interfere with daily life, such as difficulty being in public or interacting with others.
Interventions like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help individuals manage these symptoms.
Myth: Therapy is only for “crazy” or weak people ❌
Fact: ✅
Therapy is for everyone. Some people seek therapy during difficult times, while others use it to build everyday skills for personal growth. There are many types of therapy designed to support different needs and help individuals become more resilient.
Myth : “Everyone has a little OCD” ❌
Fact: ✅
Terms like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder are often misused. OCD is not just about being organized or liking things neat, it involves distressing and intrusive thoughts along with repetitive behaviors that can interfere with daily life.
Similarly, Bipolar Disorder is often misunderstood. It involves extended periods of severe depression or mania, not quick mood changes from day to day.
Using these terms incorrectly can contribute to stigma. When we use accurate language, we help create better understanding and support for those experiencing mental health challenges.

R2 Lab Family Day

This past Sunday, our lab joined in communion with our family and friends to celebrate the people in our lives who help us stay resilient every day and do the work that we do. We were also thrilled to hear that our applicant for graduate training in the lab, Gabby Maramag, has accepted her offer to start her doctoral training in the fall! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this vibrant celebration—the first of many to come—and thank you to our team member, Miracle Craft, who planned this event.
